Firefox Offers Do-Not-Track Tool to Protect Privacy of Users

The issue of online privacy has been a very hotly contested topic. As questions about the online security of web users against hackers, fraud and the protection of the privacy of netizens are constantly being raised, Firefox offers a quick solution.

Firefox announced that the web browser may soon use its newest tool: the Do-Not-Track Tool.

Do-Not-Track Tool is a response of Firefox to the call of the FTC of using do-no-track systems. Unfortunately, tech reviews reveal that this new tool of Firefox has its own sad downside.

The tool will be on its default setting, which is “off”. All of us of course do not want companies to keep track of our every move, but the companies will have first to agree to stop monitoring us before we get protected. The said news is that no companies had yet officially and publicly announced that they would comply with that agreement.

In short, the privacy of users is still cannot be assured by Firefox.

My thoughts? Why make a tool like this when at the end of the day, intruding on the privacy of users is still at the mercy and judgment of tracking companies. Makes no sense to me.

The Big Bad Blogger Issue Heats Up

The issue about the “Big Bad Blogger” is making abuzz in the online world, in particular, in the Pinoy blogosphere.

This whole controversy and discussion came from the article written by Margaux Salcedo on January 23 on the Philippine Daily Inquirer. The article was entitled, "Please don't give blogging a bad name.”

On the article, Salcedo shared about an incident involving a blogger she referred as the "Big Bad Blogger” and a PR Firm. According to Salcedo, these two demanded cash compensation from a restaurateur in exchange of good reviews. With that, she challenged the blogger and the PR firm not to give blogging and all other bloggers a bad name.

The article stirred discussions and drew up mixed reactions not only among bloggers but all those who are active on social networking sites. Unfortunately, Margaux has not identified the blogger and the PR firm. Some netizens are now urging her to bare the names of these crooked people.

There are also people who see Salcedo’s article as a knee-jerk reaction, lacking in research and full of speculations. Nonetheless, the general clamor is for her to reveal the identity of the people she was referring to on her column.

The issue about the Big Bad Blogger is not something new. However, with the popularity of social media and blogging in particular, the issue has become so controversial. Salcedo’s allegation made on her article may lack in substance, nonetheless, the general call is for her to name these people, if she has already done a good research about the whole incident. Because if some bloggers are labeled as “BBB” for extorting of some sort, then bloggers can also easily be faulted by hurling accusations based on speculations and with no hard evidence to back up the story.

What do you think of about the whole issue of the Big Bad Blogger?

Amber Van Brunt (Photo); Nurse that Had Sex with Dying Patient Banned for 20 Years

Amber Van Brunt was banned from practicing her profession for 20 years after she allegedly had sex with a married and dying patient at the latter's home.

Despite of this decision, Van Brunt is set to appeal the decision. She also reportedly called the decision as a "miscarriage of justice.”

Amber Van Brunt, 33, worked as a nurse at the Angelic Family Hospice that gives nursing care for patients at their homes.

Van Brunt through her attorney defended the sexual relationship saying that it was a consensual one. Her attorney also said that the relationship with the 43-year old patient with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis was separate from her duty as a nurse doing it at her "own personal time.”

The nursing board said on its decision:

"The nurse is the professional in this situation. It is the responsibility of the professional to say no to the vulnerable patient," the board's attorney told Oklahoma County District Judge Patricia Parrish. "The rules ...do not mean simply while you are on shift; they mean during the entire time ...you are assigned to the care of that patient, whether that is six days in the hospital or six months in hospice care or six years in a nursing home."

iJango Scam and Review

What is iJango?

iJango describes itself as a "Membership Rewards Community." It even boasted that they are “The Center of the Online Universe" according to a forum site about scams.

How do they do business? Well, if one wants to earn rewards, you have to sign up and simply recruit others. In short, if you want to have more rewards, you have to recruit more. But things don’t come easy folks.

iJango, a Scam

One has to be a member. For $150 and $20 monthly, then you can have the opportunity of recruiting more and getting all the rewards you want. Sounds easy huh? But the real score is that it has been reported that iJango is a scam. It is pyramiding scam.

The problem according to many tech sites that sounded the alarm is that when one wants to cancel the service like the monthly $20 bill, one would seem have to wait until eternity. Why? That site is almost always down. No one to talk to. Tech sites gave it a very low trust rating.
This is part of an interview of TechNow with the people of iJango.

TechNow: How is this NOT a pyramid scam? Make that easy for me.

SS: Because we produce revenue from our customers. We get revenue, our customers use their tools and utilities, and we are paid part of that revenue share.

When a business operates out of asking for money from members without any legitimate source of income, and when money collected from members is the same money paid to them, it is a scam.

Facebook Shutting Down on March 15 is a Hoax for Obvious Reasons

People from Facebook have officially released an official statement putting an end on speculations of the social networking giant shutting down on March 15.

The hoax of Facebook shutting on March 15 was reported to have all started from an online tabloid site Weekly World News (WWN). The site was said to have even posted some insider scoops about Facebook’s CEO himself saying that he wants to go back to a more relaxed life without Facebook.

With all the speculations about the issue, Facebook’s Director of Communications Larry Yu dismissed the news as silly. He said,

"Please help us put an end to this silliness... We didn't get the memo about shutting down and there's lots to do, so we'll just keep cranking away like always. We aren't going anywhere; we're just getting started."

I myself did not believe that Facebook is shutting down do abruptly. Most recently, the social networking giant with more than 500 million users has been valued by investors to be around $50 billion. With such great amount of money, one is just indeed too silly to abruptly announce that he is closing shop.

$40,000 Tuna Sold on a Japanese Auction

A blue fin tuna weighing around 754 pounds was sold for about $400,000 on Tuesday according to several news sites.

ABC News reported that the highly-priced fish specie was bought from the first auction held this year at the Tsukiji fish market in Tokyo. The winner of the auction was reportedly a joint bid from a restaurants in Tokyo and Hong Kong. With the winning bid recorded at $396,700, each kilogram is said to cost around $1,157. It was only of the 500 tuna lined up to sold in the auction.

Apparently, the blue fin tuna was caught north of Japanese waters near the island of Hokkaido.

Japanese are known for their appetite for seafood. Accordingly, blue fin tunas are prized ingredient for Japanese raw fish dishes. Over the years, there has been a growing appetite for raw fish dishes not only in Japan according to UPI News.

The growing worldwide demand is despite the apparent dwindling supply said an auction manager.

"The custom of eating raw fish is spreading throughout the world, so that it's no longer an era where Japan is consuming all of the limited supply of tuna."

Online reports said that it was the highest price recorded for a single fish on auction since 1999.
