Amber Van Brunt was banned from practicing her profession for 20 years after she allegedly had sex with a married and dying patient at the latter's home.
Despite of this decision, Van Brunt is set to appeal the decision. She also reportedly called the decision as a "miscarriage of justice.”
Amber Van Brunt, 33, worked as a nurse at the Angelic Family Hospice that gives nursing care for patients at their homes.
Van Brunt through her attorney defended the sexual relationship saying that it was a consensual one. Her attorney also said that the relationship with the 43-year old patient with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis was separate from her duty as a nurse doing it at her "own personal time.”
The nursing board said on its decision:
"The nurse is the professional in this situation. It is the responsibility of the professional to say no to the vulnerable patient," the board's attorney told Oklahoma County District Judge Patricia Parrish. "The rules ...do not mean simply while you are on shift; they mean during the entire time ...you are assigned to the care of that patient, whether that is six days in the hospital or six months in hospice care or six years in a nursing home."
