Nonito Donaire Knocks Out Fernando Montiel in Round 2 (VIDEO)

UPDATE: Donaire is set to face Vazquez on February 4 for the vacant WBO super bantamweight belt. The Donaire vs Vazquez fight will be held at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas.

Nonito “The Filipino Flash” Donaire
won a spectacular second round TKO over bantamweight king Fernando Montiel on Saturday at the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada.

The knockout stunned the Mexican-dominated crowd and Donaire took home the WBC and WBO bantamweight belts.

The knockout punch was simply spectacular. Donaire during the first round showed his speed and power and edged from Montiel as he hit the Mexican with some powerful punches. During the second round, Montiel tried to be aggressive pressing on Donaire. But Donaire countered Montiel with left hook that sent the Mexican down the canvass. The referee counted and Montiel had even stood up though was obviously wobbling from the punch he took. As the referee told the two fighters to continue fighting, Donaire barged unto Montiel with two punches and the referee immediately stepped into stop the fight.

The new record of Donaire now stands at 26-1 with 18 knockouts.

That left hook that knocked out Montiel is the very same punch that knocked out Vic Darchinyan and most recently Vladimir Sidorenko.

People are now asking if Donaire is going to stay at 118 lbs or move in weight and conquer other fighters like the very popular Puerto Rican boxer Juan Manuel Lopez. But I guess, for now, there is nothing to do but celebrate.
