The 33-year old Dan Wheldon died in a car crash Sunday at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway.
Wheldon’s car was caught up in the car crash involving 15 vehicles in the speedway.
As the incident horrified many people watching the race, emergency medical personnel and firemen immediately tried to stop the fire and rescue the racers trapped on their burning vehicles. Dan Wheldon was immediately airlifted and brought to the University Medical Center.
Reports say that doctors tried their best to save the two-time Indy winner, but two hours later also died.
According to Randy Bernard, IndyCar CEO, Wheldon’s injuries were"unsurvivable."
Wheldon’s close friend Dario Franchitti felt really sad losing someone so special. In an interview, eh said,
"One minute you're joking around at driver intros. The next, Dan's gone. I lost, we lost, a good friend. Everybody in the IndyCar series considered him a friend. He was such a good guy. He was a charmer."
With the race canceled, drivers, many sobbing openly, took part in a five-lap salute around the 1.5-mile oval in honor of one of the sport's biggest stars.
Other racers injured were Pippa Mann and JR Hildebrand who were both brought to the hospital and are now confined.Racers and spectators were all grieving while a salute and honorary act of race cars driving over the race track was done.
